Being alive comes with many challenges. Every individual, whether able-bodied or living with a disability, faces difficulties. Some challenges are physical, while others are not. But the truth is, everyone is dealing with something, and those struggles can be deeply personal and difficult to manage.
Yes, being visibly disabled or chronically ill can be more emotionally taxing. Knowing that others see our challenges and sometimes throw pity parties for us can be frustrating and even disheartening.
But here’s the bottom line: everyone has problems. Once we truly accept this, we begin to feel less alone and more empowered. Let’s not allow the label of “disabled” to keep us in a constant state of shame.
No one is better than you. We all struggle, just in different ways.
The key is to focus on our strengths, not our weaknesses. For example:
- Even if we cannot walk, we may be able to talk.
- Even if we cannot walk or talk, we may be able to think.
- Even if we cannot think, we may be able to use our hands.
- And even if we cannot walk, talk, think, or use our hands, we have support.
The list goes on. What matters is the mindset. Filling our minds with positive thoughts can brighten our day and shift our perspective.
When we feel down about our condition, we can go online and find stories of people with similar experiences who have overcome their challenges.
Watching inspirational videos on YouTube or following uplifting pages, blogs, and vlogs on social media can be powerful sources of motivation.
Most importantly, we must guard our minds from negative thoughts that try to drag us down. Self-love is essential; it influences how others see us and how they treat us.
Let’s make the most of the support available to us.
If you’re unsure about what supports you can access, ask your family or friends, or search online, yes, even “Mr Google” can help! The fact that support exists to help with what we can’t do is something to be truly thankful for.
Let’s make it a habit to appreciate our lives in every way possible.
You are the best version of yourself in this moment, and that is enough. When we realise this, we’ll work better with our support team and start living with more joy, purpose, and pride.
There is no one else like you, and there never will be.
Appreciate YOU.
